California is the state with the most number of CPA exam candidates, and therefore, I would like to give you a summary of the exam and licensing rules specifically for California.
Just to give you a background, due to historical reason, the CPA license has been granted by the 55 states and jurisdictions. These states have slightly different rules.
For California, the basic education requirement follows the 3E recommended by the AICPA. The first “E” refers to Education: 150 credit hour of higher education, a minimum number of accounting and business credit hours reflecting a concentration in accounting.
The second “E” refers to the Uniform CPA exam. This exam is administered by the AICPA and is the same across the state.
The third “E” refers to experience. California follows the general rule of having 1 year of relevant experience. But the state board has a specific rule on what is considered relevant, such as the nature of the work and who are qualified to verify this experience.
